The Rieussec estate was the property of the monks of "Carmes de langon" in the 18th century. After french revolution, church property was auctioned off by goverment.
Rieussec was classified a first growth in 1855 classification. It had a long succession of owners since then. In 1984, Rieussec was bought by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Chateau Lafite Rothchild.
